Paper

Objects in the Text: Art in the Age of Documentation

Abstract

This paper investigates the relationship between the visual artwork and its documentation, as is conventionally posed within art-critical or historical texts. In academic and other critical contexts, artworks are primarily accessed, viewed and discussed in relation to the documentation that exists within digital or print based collections. The relationship between these documentary images and what is presumed to be the original context, or object, of the work is not frequently scrutinised; an investigation that appears necessary considering the movement away from object-centric understandings of art. In this paper I will offer a preliminary account of the conditions attached to the documentary image. I will further suggest how the transition in context at work in the document begins to undermine the idea of the artwork as an autonomous and consistent entity. I will develop this discussion in relation to a number of artists who employ documentation as part of their artistic practice.
