The Scrawl of Thought: On Dürer and Design |
Abstract |
Albrecht Dürer (b. 1471) devoted much of his draughtsmanship to the "applied" arts. Knots, scabbards, shoes, and chandeliers were all sketched at one point by the artist, and yet, unheroic, they fall out of many narratives of his output. At the same time, the thing known as "design history" has trouble with these sheets' self-conscious expressivity, even when manifested in the most mundane of objects. |
