Biography

Alison Alder is currently the Artistic Director of Megalo Print Studio + Gallery in Canberra. Alder is a practising artist whose work is held in the collections of the Australian National Gallery, most State Galleries, private collections including the Cruthers Collection and the Kerry Stokes Collection, Regional Galleries and other collecting institutions including the National Library of Australia, the Australian War Memorial and the Australian Museum of Democracy.
Alder was Co-Director of Redback Graphix from 1985-1992 and worked extensively with Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory, in particular with Julalikari Arts and Nyinkka Nyunyu Art & Culture Centre in Tennant Creek. Alder was awarded an International Year of Tolerance Fellowship by the Australia Council in 1996 in recognition of her work around issues of social justice and equity.
In 2010 Alder won the prestigious Alice Prize and was awarded a residency at the Centre for Contemporary Prints in Connecticut USA. Whilst in the USA Alder held a solo exhibition at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley California.
Alder is a graduate of the Canberra School of Art and has a Masters Degree in Fine Arts (research) from Monash University.

Gestetner to One Arm Bandit

 

A panel discussion facilitated by Alison Alder between Michael Callaghan, Glenn Barkley, Mini Graff and Anna Zagala.

A low-tech process, combined with cheap materials has the capacity to unleash a power that is often lost when the method of production takes over from the rawness of the original idea.

The alluring printed 'look', exemplified in Australia with prints made in the 1930s, 70 & 80s has resurfaced in the first decade of the twenty-first century. Screen printing, offset and letterpress on stencils, stickers and posters are commandeered to make new work seen both on the street and in the gallery.

There is a traceable line of activity within Australian cultural networks where accessible printing equipment has been used to make wonderful work ' gestetner machines are an example from the late 60s/early 70s; Big Fag Press' use of an offset proofing press is a contemporary example along with a resurgence of screen printed artwork.

This history, and its current manifestations, will be explored through a panel discussion and interrogation of work made from the late 1970s to the present.

Alison Alder

Michael Callaghan
Michael Callaghan is a graduate of the National Art School, Sydney. In 1975 Callaghan worked at the Tin Sheds, University of Sydney, he tutored in Post Object Art and in 1976 he joined Earthworks Poster Collective. In 1979 Callaghan founded Redback Graphix in Brisbane. In 1980/81 Redback relocated to Wollongong and then in 1985 Redback moved to Sydney were it continues to operate. Callaghan and Redback Graphix are represented in many private and public collections nationally and internationally. In 2009 he was awarded H. C. Coombs Creative Arts Fellowship, in the School of Art, Department of Humanities at the Australian National University.
Michael Callaghan is represented by Damien Minton Galleries, Redfern, Sydney.

Anna Zagala
Anna Zagala is a writer and graphic designer living in Melbourne. When she isn't sending jobs to print she writes about art, design and film. In 2004 Anna was awarded the Gordon Darling Fellowship to undertake a study of the seminal screenprinting studio Redback Graphix. The results of Zagala's research, a book - Redback Graphix, was published by the National Gallery of Australia in 2008. Her other long term project, a feature film, titled Three Point Turn has been optioned by Matchbox Pictures. She would like to see it made one day. Glenn Barkley
Glenn Barkley is Curator at Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Sydney and was previously curator of the University of Wollongong Art collection from 1996 - 2007.
Major curatorial projects have included tell me tell me: Australian and Korean Art 1976 ' 2011, MCA and National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, Korea (2011/2012); Michael Stevenson, MCA (2011); Almanac: The Gift of Ann Lewis AO, MCA (2009-10); Making it New: Focus on Contemporary Australian Art, MCA (2009); avoiding myth & message: Australian artist and the literary world, MCA (2009); Home Sweet Home- Works from the Peter Fay Collection NGA (co-curated with Dr Deborah Hart) (2003/2004); Multiplicity: Prints and Multiples from the Collection of the MCA and the University of Wollongong, MCA (2006 and touring); Without Borders: Outsider Art in an Antipodean Context (co-curated with Peter Fay) Monash University Museum of Art and Campbelltown Art Centre, Sydney (2008).

He is currently working towards the inaugural installation of the MCA collection in the MCA's newly refurbished collection galleries and a retrospective of Ken Whisson both scheduled for 2012.

Barkley has written extensively on Australian contemporary art and has a particular interest in prints, multiples and ephemera.

Mini Graff
Mini Graff stencils and prints images which strongly relate to the given environment and community, transforming an anonymous repetitive urban landscape into a unique and personal aesthetic experience. Parody, humor and social commentary are common themes in Graff's work - notions that are translated into experiments with scale in public space - from discrete interventions to large scale installations.

Mini Graff's work is held in several public and private collections including the National Gallery of Australia. Graff's work is included in the NGA touring exhibition 'Space Invaders', currently showing at RMIT Gallery, Melbourne.
